Biography

Jeremy Enigk first emerged as the frontman of the highly touted Seattle band Sunny Day Real Estate, which issued its debut for Sub Pop Records, Diary, in 1994. In the midst of recording the group's sophomore effort, Enigk underwent a radical spiritual transformation and left the group. He later returned to complete LP2, but Sunny Day Real Estate nonetheless dissolved, leaving bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith to join Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters. Initially, Enigk retired from the music industry, but he soon picked up his guitar and began writing new songs for a solo career.

The songwriter's solo debut, The Return of the Frog Queen, bypassed the primal furor of Sunny Day Real Estate's emocore for a lush, orchestral pop sound. After its release in 1996, Sunny Day Real Estate reunited (minus Mendel) and set to work on new material, resulting in the release of How It Feel to Be Something On in 1998. The Rising Tide followed in 2000 but was poorly promoted, and the band officially split in 2001.

Just a few months later, however, Enigk came back together with Goldsmith and Mendel to form the Fire Theft, which issued a self-titled album in 2003. Finally, ten years after the release of The Return of the Frog Queen, Enigk issued his second solo record with World Waits, this time taking a much more mainstream rock approach to his songs. In August 2007, less than 12 months since his last full-length came out, Enigk issued a short album (with four new tracks and five live in-studio performances of songs off World Waits) entitled Missing Link, followed two years later by OK Bear. ~ Jason Ankeny & Marisa Brown, All Music Guide

Biography

Enigk was born in Seattle, Washington. his biggest claim to fame is his involvement with rock band Sunny Day Real Estate (SDRE), who released five albums from 1994 to 2000, in which he served as lead singer, co-songwriter and guitarist. During that band's first break-up (spanning 1995-97), Enigk released the 1996 solo album, Return of the Frog Queen. Enigk's religious convictions (he became a devout Christian in the mid-1990s[1]) were rumored to have been the catalyst for SDRE's breakup(s). There was an aborted attempt to record a second Sub Pop album, a follow-up to Return of the Frog Queen as Enigk explains, "We started a 2nd solo record and actually recorded one song with Anita (Perkins) and some of the other string players. That was the first attempt that I ever had at completely writing all the music myself, without Mark Nichols who did Return of the Frog Queen with me. But that was the only song. And then, shortly after that Sunny Day got back together, and all my songs that were meant to be for a solo record were moved to Sunny Day Real Estate. Some of the songs on How It Feels actually." [2]

He has more recently fronted the band The Fire Theft, whose lineup and sound is very similar to that of Sunny Day Real Estate.

Enigk was part of what would eventually become Poor Old Lu, sharing vocalist duties with Scott Hunter. [1] Enigk rejoined the band for a single track in 1996, singing alongside Scott on the band's Straight Six EP, on the track, "Digging Deep."

He scored the soundtrack for the 2003 film The United States of Leland. In 2006, he followed Frog Queen with another solo album, World Waits on his own label, Lewis Hollow Records. A song from the album, "Been Here Before," was included as an MP3 with Winamp.

In June 2009, it was confirmed that Sunny Day Real Estate will be reuniting once again with the original line-up.[3][4] Tour dates, starting in 2009, have been scheduled.[5]

Legacy

Sunny Day Real Estate, especially Enigk, are often cited as progenitors of today's emo music.[1]

Enigk recently commented on the bands he's seen covering his music on You Tube, in particular the band Paramore who made the SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE song "Faces In Disguise" part of their most recent tour's setlist. "I’ve actually seen one of those (Paramore) videos and I think it’s amazing. I was absolutely flattered! Because, the singer, Hayley Williams has an amazing voice! So, to see her sing it, that’s super flattering to me. From time to time, I will You Tube old SUNNY DAY videos, and I came across that." [6]
