Jerry Uelsmann has won numerous awards throughout his career, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. He has also been granted an honorary doctorate from the University of Florida.

Jerry Uelsmann was apart of the surrealist movement in the 1960's. He was a black and white photographer, and I think he was the first to put different negatives together in the dark room to form one photograph. His photographs were very surreal, creating different levels of reality. "A pioneer in the art of multilayered imagery, photographer Jerry Uelsmann (born 1934) is best known for his seamlessly grafted composite images in black and white. His photographs combine several negatives to create surreal landscapes that interweave images of trees, rocks, water and human figures in new and unexpected ways."
