Biography

Jesse Camp became an overnight star when in 1998 he won MTV's first "Wanna Be a VJ" contest, parlaying his popularity with the music video network's viewers into a record deal. Born November 4, 1979 in Granby, Connecticut. After graduating high school he relocated to Manhattan, playing drums in an East Village band named "Easy Action." Less than five months after his arrival in New York, Camp beat out 4000 other contestants in MTV's nationwide search for a new on-air personality, immediately rocketing to fame. A gaunt, flamboyant character with electric-shock hair and a voice suggesting Elmer Fudd on dope, Camp was the object of as much disdain as affection, however -- while supposedly homeless prior to landing his VJ gig, many pointed to his suburban upbringing as proof of his affluent background, and even his MTV victory was the subject of controversy after it was later reported in the Village Voice that one viewer voted for him some 3000 times. In any case, Camp grew so popular with audiences that he ultimately signed a contract with Hollywood Records, the biggest ever awarded to a fledgling act in label history; he assembled the 8th Street Kidz, a group comprised of onetime members of Vixen, LSD and Dogs D'Amour, he issued his debut LPJesse & the 8th Street Kidz in May 1999. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Controversy

During the course of Wanna Be a VJ, it was believed that he was homeless because he projected the image of a "street kid." [1]

The Village Voice reported that an internet source, known only by the handle "UglyPig", claimed to have cast over 3,000 votes for Camp in the Wanna Be a VJ contest, exploiting a security flaw in the system.[2]

Career

Camp held his position as an occasional TRL host for one year. When he left the series, Thalia DaCosta won the contest to replace him, who in turn was a VJ on the network for about a year. Upon leaving Camp attempted to parlay his MTV fame into a rock career under the name Jesse & the 8th Street Kidz on the Hollywood label. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine[3] described the hair metal–leaning album as "unbearable." Although the album received poor reviews when it debuted, recently it's sale have increased due to Jesse's cult following.

In late 2006, he was reportedly working at a Los Angeles–area pet supply store called Centinela Feed & Supply. In 2008 he began working for a non-profit organization called "Telefund" as a caller, raising money for non-profit liberal and progressive organizations. He is currently working at small local Los Angeles Dog Grooming Boutique.[4]

Other works

  • He is seen doing an impromptu cameo on the documentary by Aron Ranen called Power & Control LSD in The Sixties [5].
  • He was a panelist on two episodes of the hit Nickelodeon show Figure It Out. During one episode of the show he was "slimed" twice, once for saying the word "pass" and the other time because he was one of the panelists who "needed a time out."
  • He has walked in an Anna Sui runway show.
