Ballet in three parts with choreography by Balanchine, music by Fauré, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky, costumes by Barbara Karinska, sets by Peter Harvey, and lighting by R. Bates. Premiered 13 Apr. 1967 by New York City Ballet, at the State Theater in New York, with Verdy, Ludlow, Paul, Moncion, McBride, Villella, P. Neary, Farrell, and d'Amboise. Inspired by jewellery in the collection of Van Cleef and Arpels in New York, it is made up of three plotless works disguised as a full-length ballet. The first, ‘Emeralds’, is set to Fauré's Pelléas et Mélisande and Shylock; the second, ‘Rubies’, to Stravinsky's Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra; the third, ‘Diamonds’, to Tchaikovsky's 3rd Symphony (without the first movement). The ‘Rubies’ section was later taken into the repertoires of the Paris Opera Ballet (1974), Dutch National Ballet (1977), and the Royal Ballet (1989). The full-length ballet is also danced by the Kirov, the Paris Opera, and the National Ballet of Canada.
