Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey wrote the books, music and lyrics for the hit Broadway play, Grease, in 1972. What became for a time the longest-running show on Broadway, Grease was a light musical romance about teenagers in the 50s. It was made into an equally popular movie, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Jacobs also appeared in local productions of the play.

A "greaser" in the '50s in Chicago, Jacobs played guitar and sang with local rock and roll groups. In 1963, he became involved in a local theater group, where he met Casey. He appeared in dozens of theatrical productions around the Chicago area, while holding down a job as an advertising copywriter. He also appeared on Broadway in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, No Place to Be Somebody.
