Joan Martorell y Montells


(1833–1906)

Catalan disciple of Viollet-le-Duc and one of the most distinguished architects of the eclectic Barcelona school. His Gothic work was influenced by English architects, especially Butterfield. His most outstanding building is the Church of the Salesas (1882–5), where Gothic, Romanesque, and Mudéjar styles merge. His Mercantile Credit Society Building, Barcelona (1896–1900), was influenced by Neo-Classicism and other trends of the time. He taught Gaudí.
