A fungal infection (often of the fungus, Tinea cruri) of the groin area, relatively common among rugby players who wear sweaty jockstraps. Jock itch is very contagious and spreads quickly if towels and clothing are shared. See also fungal infections.

A contagious infection of the skin around the groin, thigh, and buttocks usually caused by the fungus Tinea cruris. Typically, it causes the skin to become itchy and red, and pus-filled blisters may develop. It is spread rapidly in contact and collision sports, and where washing facilities, towels, and clothing are shared. It is much more common in male than female athletes. It is particularly common in male athletes who wear an athletic support (jock strap). It can be prevented by ensuring scrupulous personal hygiene, keeping the skin clean and dry. It is usually treated with antifungal creams after gently washing the affected area with unscented soap and water (ensuring that the area is thoroughly rinsed and dried). Transmission of the infection during contact sports can be prevented by covering the affected area of skin.
