Biography

Best known for hosting television's extreme reality game show Fear Factor, Joe Rogan is equally at home in the standup arena, where his comic persona shifts into the edgier, angrier territory of Sam Kinison and Bill Hicks. Rogan was born on August 11, 1967, in Newark, NJ; he lived in several cities as a child (primarily Boston) and was prone to behavioral problems until discovering Tae Kwon Do in his early teens. Rogan proved highly adept, taking home championships on both state and national levels. Some of Rogan's fellow martial artists eventually coaxed him on-stage at a Boston comedy club's open-mic night, and shortly thereafter, he began to concentrate full-time on standup work. After relocating to New York, Rogan caught a series of small breaks, including an appearance on MTV's Half Hour Comedy Hour and a role on the short-lived sports comedy Hardball. Finally, Rogan landed a spot on News Radio in 1995; despite glowing reviews, the show's devoted fan base was never as sizable as NBC had hoped, partly because of its constantly shuffling time slot. When News Radio was canceled in 1999, Rogan returned to standup comedy, also recording an album drawn from performances in Houston and Boston. Titled I'm Gonna Be Dead Someday..., the record was released in late summer 2000. A year later he began hosting Fear Factor, a gig that he would have for the next six years. During the show's last year, Rogan also became famous for accusing fellow comedians Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia of being "joke thieves." He offered evidence on talk show appearances and his own website. For some, it seemed odd that Rogan should take up the cause, since his live comedy work had taken a backseat to his television work. His 2007 album for Comedy Central, Shiny Happy Jihad, helped reintroduce him as a standup comedian. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Conflicts with other comedians

Rogan has been an outspoken critic of comedic plagiarism. For example, on February 10, 2007 at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, Rogan argued on-stage with Carlos Mencia, accusing him of plagiarizing other comedians' work.[1] According to Rogan's account, he had just finished his act and introduced the next performer, Ari Shaffir, as a comedian who opens for "Carlos Men-steal-ia".[2] Mencia took offense and walked on the stage. Rogan then accused him of stealing jokes and falsely portraying himself as a Mexican American. The Comedy Store later canceled Rogan's shows. The entire incident was filmed as part of filming for Rogan's internet reality show, JoeShow. It was then made available to watch or download at numerous websites, including Rogan's.[2]

According to Rogan, he is currently banned from the Comedy Store for violating the club's request that he not film his internet reality show there.[3] According to Rogan, his agent and publicity firm (who also represents Mencia) demanded that he either apologize to Mencia or else be dropped from the agency. He chose to leave the agency.[4] Rogan has also strongly criticized Denis Leary for plagiarizing Bill Hicks.[5]

Personal life

One of the recurring themes in his stand-up comedy and life is the use and support of cannabis, psilocybin mushrooms and DMT. Rogan supports the medical and recreational use of cannabis.[6] He has also starred in the marijuana documentary The Union: The Business Behind Getting High. He has an isolation tank in his basement, which many[who?] believe fosters the body's natural production of DMT.[7]

On May 21, 2008, Rogan announced on the Kevin and Bean radio show in Los Angeles that his girlfriend had a baby girl, and confirmed the news on his fan forum.[8]

Rogan is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Eddie Bravo, and a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
