Biography
Carl Loewe (1796-1869) was a German composer, conductor, and singer remembered for his important body of songs, as well as for numerous operas, oratorios, and cantatas. Loewe achieved international fame for his concert tours across Europe and his reputation as a composer solidified around his vocal writing, but he also composed some chamber and keyboard music. Often compared to Schubert, Loewe shared with him an avid interest in poetry, ranging from anonymous verses to the works of Goethe and Byron. Loewe's ballads are often through-composed, rather than strophic, and they mark a significant development in Romantic text-setting. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
