Trithemius, Johannes von, real name Heidenberg (Trittenheim nr. Trier, 1462-1516, Würzburg), abbot of Sponheim near Kreuznach, 1485-1506, and thereafter of St James's (St Jakob) at Würzburg, was one of the outstanding German humanists of his age. His interests covered history, literature and its history, and secret codes of writing. Among his more important works are Catalogus illustrium virorum Germaniae (1491), Catalogus scriptorum ecclesiae (1494), and two works on secret handwriting, Stenographia (1500) and Polygraphia (1518). He wrote exclusively in Latin; Trithemius is the Latinized form of his birthplace.
