The question is wrong. John Hyrcanus lived in the middle of the
Second Temple period, when the nation was named Judea and had
existed for a long time already. Besides, he was divisive, not
unifying.

Herod the Great was of Idumaean blood. The Idumaeans were of the
Edomite stock, the descendants of Esau. However we do not know if
Herod was born in Edom or in Israel as John Hyrcanus brought some
idumaeans into Palestine about B.C. 130.
