Biography

With a 1953 Pulitzer Prize, a Tony and a New York Drama Critics Circle Award for his play Teahouse of the August Moon, and numerous other successful Broadway productions, John Patrick is best known as a playwright, but he also wrote screenplays for over two-dozen films, including the screenplay for Teahouse (1956), Three Coins in the Fountain (1954), Love Is a Many Splendored Thing (1955), and The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968). Patrick started out scripting programs for NBC radio out of San Francisco in 1933 and then turned to theatrical productions. His play The Hasty Heart describes his experiences as a battlefield ambulance driver during WWII. In 1949, Ronald Reagan starred in the film version. His screenplay for the musical Les Girls (1957) earned Patrick an award from the Screen Writers Guild. Patrick spent the last two years of his life in a Delray Beach, FL, assisted-care facility. On November 7, 1995, the 90-year-old playwright was found dead in his room with a plastic bag over his head. His death was ruled a suicide. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
