(b Liverpool, 28 Aug 1931). English bass-baritone. He studied with Roy Henderson, sang at Glyndebourne in the early 1960s, then joined the English Opera Group in 1964, creating leading baritone roles in Britten's church parables and Owen Wingrave (1971) and the seven baritone roles in Death in Venice (Covent Garden, 1973; Met, 1974). He also sang Eugene Onegin at Glyndebourne and several Mozart roles. His concert repertory encompasses Bach, Berlioz, Brahms, Elgar and Tippett and his sensitivity, expressive intensity and characterful tone make him an admired lieder singer.
