John Shore

(b c 1662; d London, 1752). English trumpeter. He played at the English court and became Sergeant-trumpeter in 1707; he performed many of Purcell's difficult trumpet parts. He was also a lutenist and probably a violinist. He has been credited with the invention of the tuning-fork. His father, Matthias Shore (d 1700), had served as Sergeant-trumpeter from 1687; another member of the family, William Shore (d 1707), held the post from 1700. Matthias's daughter Catherine Shore (c 1668-1730) was a soprano.
