Biography

Dublin-born Johnny Moynihan has been at the cutting edge of Celtic music for more than three decades. The first musician to use the kazoo and the bombard in Irish music, Moynihan is credited with bringing the first bouzouki to Ireland. A former member of Sweeney's Men, Planxty, and De Danaan, Moynihan continues his musical exploration with the Fleadh Cowboys, a band that he formed in 1985 with Peter Cummins and Frank Lane.

Moynihan first made his impact felt as a member of Sweeney's Men. Formed in 1966 with Andy Irvine and Joe Dolan, Sweeney's Men was one of Ireland's modern folk-traditional groups. The band was a sensation from the onset. Their debut single, "Old Maid in the Garret," reached number two on the Irish music charts. Replacing Donal Lunny in Planxty in July 1973, Moynihan helped to usher in a new era of modern Celtic music. He returned to more traditional sounds as a member of De Danaan. Except for a brief period in the early '90s, Moynihan has worked with the Fleadh Cowboys. The group hosted a series of star-studded shows in the late '80s, Midnight at the Olympia, that featured such guests as Joe Ely, Nanci Griffith, Hot House Flowers, Mary Black, and Shane McGowen. Moynihan and the Fleadh Cowboys toured as supporting act for the Pogues, U-2, Emmylou Harris, and Bob Dylan, who was so impressed by the band that he released their album High Ace to Heaven on his own label. Although he left, along with Cummins, in 1990, the Fleadh Cowboys continued to perform with Lane as the sole founding member. Four years later, the original group reunited. Their first studio album in nearly a decade, Time of Your Life, was released in 1997. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Johnny Moynihan (born Phibsboro, Dublin), is a folk singer based in Dublin, Ireland. A gifted musician, he is responsible for introducing the bouzouki and the Irish bouzouki into Irish music in the mid 1960s. Known as "The Bard of Dalymount", as a young man he played in the band Sweeney's Men with Andy Irvine, Terry Woods and (Galway) Joe Dolan. Sweeney's Men broke the mould of Irish music and are credited with starting the folk revival there in the late 1960s. The group made two albums, Sweeney's Men and The Tracks of Sweeney. The latter was without Irvine, who had taken himself off to the Balkans, an area that made a lasting impact on his subsequent music. Both albums are available on Transatlantic Records. In the 1970s Moynihan briefly joined Planxty for their album Cold Blow and the Rainy Night. His distinctive nasal drawl makes this one of the best Planxty albums ever released containing gems such as "The Frost is All Over" and "P Stands for Paddy I Suppose." After Planxty, Moynihan went his own way and for a period of time fronted the Fleadh Cowboys, a popular band in 1980s Dublin. He also flirted briefly with De Danann and can be heard on their second album, Selected Jigs, Reels & Songs (never issued on CD). He reunited for a one-off concert with Irvine in Galway in 2001 and can be seen and heard frequently in the Cobblestone Pub, Smithfield, Dublin. He is an erratic character though and it was considered doubtful if he and Irvine would ever play together again; however, they did so for a one-off gig as Sweeney's Men in Rostevor Co Down on 22 July 2007 (with Paul Brady deputising for Joe Dolan who was unwell).

He was famously associated with the folk singer Anne Briggs in the 1970s and both of them traded off their mutual inclination for wild behaviour. He plays backing guitar on several Anne Briggs songs.

The world of Moynihan and Sweeney's Men are best summed up in Andy Irvine's song "My Heart's Tonight in Ireland" on his "Rain on the Roof" album. It is available from Irvine's own website, [1].

More information about Moynihan and his career with Planxty can be found in the 2006 book by Leagues O'Toole entitled 'The Humours of Planxty.'
