The green character on the covers of the American versions of the Hitchhiker's Guide series is known as the Joo Janta 200 Super-Chromatic Peril Sensitive Sunglasses. They are a fictional product in the series that turn completely black at the first hint of danger. The character was designed by Peter Cross, the cover artist for the American editions, and became an iconic symbol of the series.
