(b Manila, 31 Jan 1917). Filipino composer. He studied in Manila and with Boulanger in Paris (1937-41), then toured internationally as a pianist. In 1958 he worked briefly in the Paris musique concrète studio and met Xenakis and Boulez, and in 1960 he began teaching Asian music at the University of the Philippines. His music draws on ethnic and avant-garde models; primitive ritual informs his Pagsamba for 241 performers (1968).
