Jude (1st century), apostle and martyr. He is usually identified with Thaddaeus and Jude, the brother of James, one of the ‘brethren of the Lord’ and the author of the Epistle of Jude. Little is known of his life after Pentecost. According to Western tradition he joined with Simon in preaching the Gospel in Persia, where both were martyred. In modern times Jude has acquired considerable popularity as ‘patron of hopeless cases’ whose efficacy is testified even in the personal columns of The Times. This patronage is said to have originated because nobody invoked him for anything since his name so closely resembled that of Judas who betrayed the Lord; consequently he favours even the most desperate situations of his clients. There are at least three ancient English dedications to SS. Simon and Jude, but none to either of them alone. The relics of SS. Simon and Jude are believed to have been translated to St. Peter's, Rome, in the 7th–8th century: Reims and Toulouse also claimed notable relics. In art Jude's usual emblem is a club, the instrument of his death; otherwise (as often on East Anglian screens) he holds a ship, while Simon holds a fish, possibly because they were believed, as cousins of Zebedee, to follow the same calling as him. Feast: (with Simon) in the West, 28 October; in the East, Jude alone on 19 June.

Jude, epistle of the New Testament, the next to last book of the Bible. The Jude who wrote it has been identified since ancient times with St. Jude the apostle, but most modern scholars deny the identity and date the letter as late as A.D. 100. It is called a Catholic (or General) Epistle, but it is clearly intended for a particular audience, which it warns against some heresy that led to immorality. The dangers are shown from Old Testament examples. The book contains references to Jewish apocryphal books, Enoch and the Assumption of Moses. It ends with a doxology. Jude has a close literary relationship with Second Peter.

Plot summary

In the Victorian period, Jude Fawley (Eccleston) is a young man who dreams of a scholarly university education. Circumstances conspire against him, however, forcing him into a job as a stonemason and an unhappy marriage to a country girl, Arabella (Griffiths). He remains true to his dream, however, and months later, after his wife's sudden departure, heads for the city, where he thinks education lies for any man who is willing to work hard. There he encounters his beautiful cousin, Sue Bridehead (Winslet), who shares his intelligence and disdain for convention, and the two develop a romantic relationship. These unlikely lovers must struggle to keep their relationship from a disapproving world, however, or else face the tragic consequences of public scandal.
