Dater, Judy (b. 1941), American feminist and photographer. After studying art, she met Imogen Cunningham, became an admirer, and wrote Imogen Cunningham: A Portrait (1979). Dater's photograph of Cunningham and a young nude model, Twinka, published in her Women and Other Visions (1975), was inspired by Thomas Hart Benton's painting Persephone, and challenged the traditional relationship of male artist and female model. Dater's series of self-portraits, made at the time her marriage was ending, also explore the nature of gender. She received a Guggenheim Award in 1979, and published two further books of her work: Body and Soul (1988) and Cycles (1994).
