Biography

The second of three children, Julian McMahon was born in Sydney, Australia, where his father served as prime minister from 1971-1972. McMahon didn't show any particular interest in acting during his youth; in fact, he went to the University of Sydney fully intending to study law, but became bored with college life and left with dreams of a modeling career in 1987. While that path was fruitful enough to take McMahon to some of the world's most prominent fashion arenas (including Milan, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, and Rome), it was a blue jeans commercial in his native country that led to an 18-month stint on a popular Australian prime-time soap opera. After his departure, he landed a role in the television series Home and Away (1988), which was eventually adapted into a musical. A supporting role in Wet and Wild Summer! (1992) prompted McMahon to make a more permanent move to Los Angeles, where he planned to pursue acting full-time. Sure enough, McMahon quickly found a role on NBC's long-running daytime soap Another World, and, after leaving the show two years later, he participated in a series of plays, as well as several unremarkable films (including Magenta in 1996). McMahon's forte, clearly, was in the world of prime-time television: In 1996, he co-starred in Profiler, and later took on a role in Charmed, a WB fantasy series in which he played a love interest saddled with the unfortunate trait of being a demon. Though McMahon starred alongside Jeff Daniels in director Michael Walker's psychological thriller Chasing Sleep in 2000, his true breakout role would come in 2003, when he won the starring role of playboy plastic surgeon Dr. Christian Troy in Nip/Tuck, F/X's joyfully over-the-top nighttime drama. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Julian Dana William McMahon (born 27 July 1968) is an Australian actor and former fashion model, best known for his portrayals of Cole Turner in The WB hit series Charmed, womanizing plastic surgeon Christian Troy on the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning TV show Nip/Tuck, and Doctor Doom/Victor Von Doom in Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Early life

McMahon was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, the second of the three children of William McMahon (later Sir William), later Australian Prime Minister, and his wife Sonia McMahon, an occupational therapist and fashion icon.[1][2] He has an older sister, Melinda, and a younger sister, Deborah. McMahon has Irish ancestry.[3]

McMahon was educated at Sydney Grammar School, a private boys' school. He briefly studied Law at the University of Sydney and Economics at the University of Wollongong, but this bored him and he started a successful modeling career. Because of this, he became known in the fashion capitals Milan, New York, Rome, and Paris.

Career

In addition to a career as a fashion model, including a jeans commercial for Levi Strauss, McMahon began an acting career on Australian soap Home and Away, playing the soldier Ben Lucini (1990–1991). McMahon was one of several Home and Away cast-members to star in a stage musical about the soap, which toured the UK in 1991. Adam Willits, Sharyn Hodgson (who played his on-screen wife, Carly), Mouche Phillips and Justine Clarke also starred.[4]

He then appeared in the film Wet and Wild Summer! (a.k.a. Exchange Lifeguards) in 1992, and following this he appeared in his then soon-to-be wife Dannii Minogue's music videos for her 1993 hits "This Is It" and "This Is The Way". His first role on American television was on the daytime soap opera Another World, playing Ian Rain from 1993 to 1995. He also went on to play Dr. Michael Walsh in the movie Magenta in 1996, Sheriff Hayes in In Quiet Night (a.k.a. You Belong to Me Forever) in 1998, George Simian in the psychological thriller Chasing Sleep in 2000, and David Cameron in the made for TV movie Another Day in 2001.

From 1996 to 2000, he starred in all four seasons of the NBC drama Profiler as Agent John Grant. Following this, McMahon joined the cast of the WB's supernatural hit show Charmed, playing the demonic Cole Turner from 2000 to 2003. The character was killed off in the 100th episode of the series, but returned for a one-off guest appearance in the 150th episode in 2005.

Following Charmed, McMahon's next role was playboy plastic surgeon Christian Troy on the FX series Nip/Tuck . He was nominated for the Golden Globe award for "Best Actor in a Television Series - Drama" in 2005 for his performance. Throughout this series, McMahon appeared nude in a large number of episodes.

During this time, McMahon also portrayed supervillain Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four, the 2005 film adaptation of the comic book series of the same name. The film was a box office success, and McMahon reprised his role as Doom in the sequel in 2007.

McMahon was also allegedly one of the actors being considered for the role of James Bond in the film Casino Royale, though the part ultimately went to Daniel Craig.[citation needed]

He also appeared alongside Sandra Bullock in the 2007 supernatural thriller Premonition.

Personal life

McMahon has been married and divorced twice, first briefly, to Australian singer and actress Dannii Minogue and subsequently to American actress Brooke Burns, with whom he had a daughter, Madison Elizabeth born 9 June 2000. He was also linked to Shannen Doherty, his co-star from Charmed.

When he made a guest appearance on The View in October 2006, he presented a rug for Rosie O'Donnell as a joke. The rug was used in a love scene between the two in the fourth season of Nip/Tuck.
