Biography

Like many actresses who've been typecast as airheads, Julie Hagerty is infinitely more intelligent than most of the characters she's played. After six years' worth of training in her hometown of Cincinnati and at Julliard, Hagerty pursued a modelling career in New York, continuing to take acting lessons under the tutelage of William Hickey. She then spent a few seasons playing a variety of roles at the Production Company, a Greenwich Village theatre troupe which she co-founded with her brother Michael. In 1980, she appeared in her first film, playing ditzy stewardess Elaine Dickinson in the disaster-flick lampoon Airplane!. The following year, she delivered a marvelous performance as the limited-intellect mistress of professorial Jose Ferrer in Woody Allen's A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982). A couple of inconsequential projects followed (including the inevitable Airplane! sequel) before Hagerty once more appeared in a worthwhile role in a worthwhile film: in 1985's Lost in America, Hagerty and Albert Brooks (who also directed) sparkled as a pair of starry-eyed yuppies who try to go the "Easy Rider" route. She was cast against type (and also appeared sans screen credit) as the mistress of Claus von Buhlow in Reversal of Fortune (1990). There have been several career ups and downs since: the most recent "up", if only on an artistic level, was the 1995 film The Wife. On television, Julie Hagerty starred as Tracy Dillon in the short-duration series Princesses (1991). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Julie Hagerty (born June 15, 1955) is an American actress and former model.

Early life

Hagerty was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Harriet Yuellig, a model and singer, and Jerry Hagerty, a musician.[1][2] The two later divorced. Hagerty attended Indian Hill High School. She was signed as a model for Ford Models at 15 and spent summers modeling in New York City. She moved there in 1972, and worked at her brother's theater group, as well as studying with actor William Hickey.

Career

Hagerty made her off-Broadway debut in 1979, starring in Mutual Benefit Life at her brother's theater, "The Production Company". She continued appearing on stage, including starring in a Broadway version of The House of Blue Leaves. Her first film role was in All That Jazz, but her small part was cut out of the finished film. She was subsequently cast in the parody film, Airplane!, which was released in June 1980 and became one of the most financially successful films of its year, grossing over $80 million domestically.[3] The film was considered the first of the modern parody genre, and established Hagerty as a noted comedic actress.

Hagerty spent the 1980s starring in a number of theatrical films, ranging from the well-reviewed Lost In America and Woody Allen's A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy to the badly received Beyond Therapy. Her roles often involved a naive or spaced-out character who seems to be unaware of whatever chaos is surrounding her, as exemplified in Airplane! and its sequel. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Hagerty mostly appeared in made-for-television movies or supporting roles in Hollywood films, including a part in the 2005 film, Just Friends and 2006 film, She's The Man. She was also cast in the 1994 Designing Women spin-off Women of the House, but she was committed to another project when filming began, so Valerie Mahaffey substituted for her in several episodes. She eventually joined the cast, filmed two episodes and resigned, handing the reins back to Mahaffey, who bowed out after one final appearance. In 2002, she appeared in the Broadway revival of Morning's at Seven. She recently appeared in the CSI episode "Leapin' Lizards".

Personal life

Hagerty dated actor/director/writer Albert Brooks, who cast her in his film Lost in America, as well as choreographer/director Bob Fosse. She married Peter Burki in 1986, although the couple began divorce proceedings in 1991. In 1999 she married Hollywood life insurance magnate and theater producer Richard Kagan.[4] Julie summers in the Lakes Region area of Maine.
