A Roman centurion who was responsible for the safe passage of Paul from Caesarea to Rome by ship. His name reflects an affiliation of loyalty to the Roman imperial family, the "gens Julia", of which Caesar was a member. The noble manner of Julius is emphasized throughout the story of the stormy sea voyage (Acts chap. 27), and especially in his intervention to save Paul's life (Acts 27:42-43).
