Actually, most of them didn't. The stated aim of the majority
from 1789 to 1792 was a constitutional monarchy. It was Louis XVI's
intransigeance and his attempt to escape to his allies outside the
country which led to his own downfall and that of the Monarchy.
nevertheless, the French chose the Empire in 1805, the restored
Monarchy in 1814, the July monarchy in 1830 and the Second Empire
in 1852 before finally giving up on the idea of monarchy in
1870.
