Jump the couch means to show strange or frenetic behavior. A new term coined in 2005, it evolved from Tom Cruise's manic behavior on the Oprah Winfrey show, when he jumped on the couch while proclaiming his love for fiancee Katie Holmes. Cruise later mocked his Oprah performance by jumping on Jay Leno's couch and pumping his arms as fans cheered.
