Bangkok is known for transsexual women mainly because that is where most of the surgeons are. Part of it is also due to a cultural misunderstanding confusing kathoeys (ladyboys) with transsexual women. Bangkok has a lot of kathoey-centered entertainment, and films produced in other countries have popularized this. Such films also spread confusion. The transsexual woman simply wants to get surgery and blend in as other women, while kathoeys and male-born non-op transgender types tend to fit more into a third-sex designation.
