Katie Price

Who2 Biography: Katie Price, Model / Socialite

  • Born: 22 May 1978 (?)
  • Birthplace: Brighton, Sussex, England
  • Best Known As: The U.K. tabloid model known as "Jordan"

Name at birth: Katrina Infield

Katie Price, also known as Jordan, parlayed frequent nude and semi-nude appearances in the British tabloid The Sun into a full-time career as a celebrity whose fame rested on, as the Daily Mail once put it, "a décolletage that defied both the laws of biology and physics." The one-time Baywatch aspirant got her start under the name Jordan as a model for "Page 3," a girl-next-door photo feature of The Sun. Over the years she became a reader favorite, known for several breast-enhancing surgeries, her outrageous public behavior and her failed love affairs with pop singers and soccer stars. In 2002 she appeared in Hugh Hefner's Playboy magazine. Price's reputation as an over-exposed celebrity led to a trio of documentaries by filmmaker Richard Macer: Jordan: The Truth About Me (2002), Jordan: The Model Mum (2004) and Jordan: You Don't Even Know Me (2004). She met the Australian-English pop singer Peter Andre when both appeared on the "reality" show I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2004. They were married in 2005, and their relationship was further documented in the U.K. TV program Katie and Peter. The pair moved to Los Angeles in 2007 when their television series was picked up by E! and renamed Katie and Peter: Stateside. They separated in 2009.

Price and Andre have two children together: Junior (b. 2006) and Princess Tiamii (b. 2007). Price also has a son, Harvey, born in 2002 from her relationship with soccer player Dwight Yorke.

Biography

Katie Price was already one of the most famous women in Great Britain before she released her first album in late 2006 -- also known as Jordan, Price began her career as a model and has become a one-woman media empire in the U.K., having published books, written newspaper columns, hosted television shows, starred in an exercise video, and marketed her own line of lingerie. Born Katie Infield on May 22, 1978, Price grew up in the oceanside resort community of Brighton in East Essex, England, and while friends have described her as a late bloomer, when she turned 16 she went to a professional photographer to create a modeling portfolio on the advice of a friend. Using the pseudonym Jordan, Price soon found work as a "Page Three Girl," posing for the topless cheesecake photos which are a traditional feature of British tabloids, and it wasn't long before she was appearing in the pages of "lad rags" such as Maxim, FHM, and Front. In 1998, Price's fame grew to new heights when she had breast enhancement surgery, expanding her already impressive bustline to a remarkable D cup, which she regarded as a savvy business decision -- as she told a reporter, "Some people may be famous for creating a pencil sharpener. I'm famous for my tits." (Ironically one of Britain's leading tabloids, the Sun, barred Price from their pages after announcing they would only hire "all natural" models.) Price next began appearing regularly in the British edition of Playboy magazine, and made the cover of the American edition in 2002. Price's private life also began drawing attention, as she was romantically linked with British football stars Dwight Yorke and Teddy Sheringham, pop singers Dane Bowers and Gareth Gates, and Warren Foreman, better known as "Ace" on the British television series Gladiators. Price's celebrity soon brought her to television; she was a contestant on the reality series I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, tried her hand at auto racing on Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, and appeared as herself on an episode of Footballer's Wives. While working on I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, Price met singer Peter Andre, and the two hit it off; they became parents of a baby boy in June 2005 and were wed three months later. With Price already an established writer, having published two autobiographies and contributing an advice column to OK magazine, music was one of the few fields left for her to conquer, and in 2005 Price was one of the artists representing England in the Eurovision Song Contest. While her appearance on Eurovision received mixed notices, Price and Andre teamed up to record a duet album, A Whole New World, which was released in late November 2006; the title track became a hit single, and the couple donated their proceeds from the recording to children's charities. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

Early life

Katrina Amy Alexandria Alexis Infield[2] was born and raised in Brighton, England. Her maternal grandmother is Jewish.[3][4] She took the surname Price after her mother remarried following the split from her biological father when she was a child. Price has an older brother named Daniel and a younger half sister, Sophie Price.[5] She also attended secondary school at Blatchington Mill Secondary School which she later revisited for a TV show called "With a Little Help from My Friends".[6]

Her decision to start modelling came after a friend suggested she have some professional photographs done. The pictures were sent to a modelling agency in London and, to her surprise, the agency invited her into their studios for a photo shoot and to discuss a contract.[citation needed] She began appearing on Page 3 of The Sun newspaper (topless modelling).[7]

Career

Modelling

Despite frequent appearances on Page 3 and in men's lifestyle magazines, Jordan was insecure about the size of her breasts, believing that breast implants would make her look better. Despite protests from friends and family, Jordan underwent the operation, increasing her cup size from a B to an F.[8]

Politics

During the 7 June 2001, British General Election, Jordan ran as a candidate in Stretford and Urmston under her real name using the slogan: 'For a Bigger and Betta Future'. As part of her comical election campaign, she promised free breast implants, more nudist beaches, and a ban on parking tickets.[9] In the end, Jordan won 713 votes,[10] 1.8% of the votes cast.

Television

In an attempt to cross over from modelling to other areas, Price auditioned for a part on the television series Baywatch in 1998, guest presented The Big Breakfast and played herself in an episode of Dream Team.

Jordan began 2004 by appearing (as Katie Price which she prefers to be known while not modelling) on the reality TV series I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, alternately falling out with John Lydon and flirting in the jungle with singer Peter Andre whom she eventually married. She appeared in several Bushtucker trials, including one where she had to brave a tank full of small, harmless jellyfish for points. Although she performed well, she gave up on account of the creatures becoming trapped in her bikini, prompting her to drag herself out of the water in hysterics. Price appeared on Top Gear's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car on 23 May 2004. She completed the lap in 1min 52secs. She also made a cameo appearance playing herself in an episode of the television drama series Footballers' Wives and appeared in the programme Jordan Gets Even for Five.

She appeared in the documentaries Jordan: Living With a Dream (Channel 4), Jordan: The Truth About Me, Jordan: Model Mum, Jordan: You Don't Even Know Me (BBC Choice), Jordan Gets Even (Five) and the series When Jordan Met Peter (ITV), Jordan & Peter: Laid Bare (ITV2), Jordan & Peter: Marriage and Mayhem (ITV2), and the Katie & Peter series, including Katie & Peter: The Next Chapter (ITV2) and Katie & Peter: The Baby Diaries. Katie & Peter was also shown in the United States; it aired on E!.

In summer 2005, Jordan was one of many guest hosts of the first series of The Friday Night Project. In December 2005 she released an exercise fitness DVD The Jordan Workout featuring "The Juice Master" Jason Vale.

Katie & Peter: Unleashed began on Friday 19 October 2007 at 9pm on ITV2.[11] A new series titled, Katie & Peter: The Next Chapter Down Under aired on ITV2 on 27 March 2008 at 9pm running for 13 weeks.[12] Katie & Peter: Stateside began on Thursday 16 April 2009 on ITV2 and followed the family as they relocate to Malibu, California for three months, where Andre recorded his new album.

A further series aired in August/September 2009 called What Katie Did Next, which showed Katie's life/career after her split and eventual divorce from Peter Andre.

Music

Under the name Katie Price, she was one of the acts competing for the right to represent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2005, to be held in Ukraine. On 5 March 2005, singing a song titled "Not Just Anybody", wearing a skin-tight latex pink catsuit whilst heavily pregnant, coming in second place in the pre-selection show Making Your Mind Up, behind Javine. The other contestants were the 1996 UK entrant Gina G, as well as Andy Scott-Lee, and the group Tricolore.[13]

Price and Andre released a duets album on 27 November 2006 titled A Whole New World, with all proceeds going to their chosen charities affiliated with the many health conditions of her eldest son and as a father figure to her son, Harvey. The album debuted at #20 in the UK album chart and achieved platinum status. [14] She Also appeared in Peter Andre's music video, "The Right Way".

Published works

To coincide with her appearance on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! earlier in the year, Price released the first of three autobiographies – Being Jordan – in May 2004. Initially turned down by the mainstream publishing houses after demanding a £1 million advance, she was eventually signed up by small independent publisher John Blake, a former tabloid journalist, for £10,000 plus royalties. In a departure from industry norms, she conducted a 10 day book signing tour which provoked enough interest—contrary to expectations, almost exclusively female—to propel her to first position in the Nielsen BookScan hardback sales chart and to sell 97,090 copies in little over a year and over one million, as of January 2007.[15][16][17]

Her second autobiography – Jordan: A Whole New World – detailing her wedding and family life - reached number two in the hardback general category, selling 198,105 copies by 1 April 2006.[18] Price's third autobiography Pushed to the Limit was released in February 2008.[19]

Her first ghostwritten novel, Angel, about a young woman who becomes a model, was published in June 2006, and sold 300,000 copies in six weeks.[citation needed]

Her second ghostwritten novel, Crystal, about a young woman's efforts to become a singer, sold 159,407 copies during the first three months after its release in June 2007.[20] All four books were ghostwritten by Rebecca Farnworth.[21][22]

In 2006 Price signed a £300,000 advance with Random House for Katie Price's Perfect Ponies,[23] a series of children's books, with the first 6 released in 2007. Three more books have been released throughout 2008.[16][dead link][24] A title from that series, My Pony Care Book, was nominated for the WH Smith's Children's Book of the Year. In 2008, she released a new children's book series entitled Mermaids & Pirates, with six in the series. Four more are expected for release in April 2008.[25]

Price continues to write a regular advice column in OK! magazine.[12]

In 2009, Price released a novel entitled Sapphire which has been NO1 on the hardback fiction chart for 4 consecutive weeks and sold 42,215 copies in its first two weeks in the UK alone.[26]

Endorsements

In October 2003, Price appeared in an advertising campaign for the supermarket chain Kwik Save. To publicise the chain's promotion to cut the prices of their leading lines in half, Price was sawn in half by magician Peter McCahon.[27]

In November 2006, Price launched The Katie Price Lingerie Collection in conjunction with Panache, available exclusively at Asda stores, as well as a follow-up jewellery deal with Argos.

In 2007, Price was announced as the new face of Foxy Bingo and launched a hair care range at Superdrug. She also brought out her first perfume, 'Stunning', in August. Her second perfume, 'Besotted', was released in September 2008. November 2007 saw Price releasing her 'Jordan' hair care electrical range at Superdrug. There was a hairdryer, straighteners and curlers. She released a second, similar range in November 2008 under the name 'Katie Price', to somewhat differing design.

In 2008, Price signed a deal with Derby House to launch her equestrian range named 'KP Equestrian'.[28] On March 23, Price launched her springwear of KP Equestrian as well as KP Pony, which is for children.[citation needed]

In 2008, Price was refused admission to Guards Polo Club for the most prestigious day in the international Polo Season and a highlight of the British Social Season, the Hurlingham Polo Cartier International match for the Coronation Cup, presented by HRH Prince Charles. She attempted to circumvent this by buying a table at the Chinawhite marquee for £6,000 through her agent, but this was refused as well. A statement said "Jordan has been told she is not welcome. Polo is very prestigious and there are certain names they want there and others they definitely don’t. Jordan is still too 'chavvy' as far as Cartier is concerned. Having Jordan there just wouldn’t be in keeping with Cartier’s image. If she turns up she will not be allowed access".[29]

In 2009 Price was named as the Patron of a charity polo match that was played at an Estate, near Epping, Essex. She was photographed arriving by helicopter, wearing a mini-dress and stiletto heels. Ex-boyfriend Dane Bowers and Jade Goody's widower Jack Tweed also attended.[30]

Wealth

In October 2006, an article was published in The Daily Mail called The Chav Rich List. Price and her husband Peter Andre were ranked at #2, second only to David and Victoria Beckham.[citation needed]

In 2006 the famous private banking house Coutts & Co (bankers to the British Royal Family and to the rich and famous of British Society) refused to accept Price as a client, in spite of her estimated wealth.[31] Coutts are known to be extremely selective in whom they accept as customers and their criteria for acceptance is not solely based on their well-known requirement that their clients must have at least £500,000 in 'disposable funds' - not including houses.[32]

In 2009 it was reported she had earned £6.5 million with £4.5 million earned the previous year taking her total wealth to a reported £40 million. Price has raised over £1 million for Vision Charity.[citation needed]

Controversy

Price and her ex-husband Peter Andre were criticised for sexually explicit behaviour in their reality show. In taping the show the couple re-enacted sex scenes (while fully clothed) and had frank discussions about sex.[33]

The couple were libelled by an ex-employee and later accepted damages from the News of the World newspaper after it published the accusations about their parental abilities.[34]

In May 2009, three days after her announced separation from Peter Andre, her management company of five years said that they would no longer represent her. They have chosen to represent Peter Andre instead.[35]

In September 2009 Katie was heard complaining about the scars on her breasts left from cosmetic surgery. This angered breast cancer sufferes as Katie recently did a photoshoot for Asda's tickled pink breast cancer awareness campaign. As a result Katie was dropped by Asda.

Personal life

Katie Price and Peter Andre during the 2009 London Marathon

Price embarked on several brief relationships with celebrities and sports stars including footballers Teddy Sheringham, Dwight Yorke, singer Gareth Gates, and the TV Gladiator 'Ace' (real name Warren Furman).[36] Jordan had a much publicised relationship with Dane Bowers of the boy band Another Level. She had an abortion after discovering he had cheated on her.[36]

On 27 May 2002, she gave birth in Brighton to her first son, Harvey. Harvey's father is the former footballer Dwight Yorke. Jordan has said she had intended to have at least one birth shown live over the Internet, but she later decided to keep it private.[37] He was found to be blind, having a condition known as septo-optic dysplasia, meaning that the development of his optic nerve was unpredictable. As he has matured, she has also discovered that he is on the autistic spectrum, gains weight easily, and finds walking difficult.[36]

In 2003, Price was treated for cancer. She had a leiomyosarcoma on her finger and the tumour was removed at a Nuffield Hospital near her Brighton home.[38]

In February 2005, Price announced that she was five months pregnant, with Peter Andre's child. Price gave birth in Westminster, London,[39] by Caesarean section to her second child, a 5 lb 13 oz (2,636 g) boy named Junior Savva Andreas Andre, on 13 June 2005. On 10 September 2005, she married Andre at Highclere Castle, Hampshire. In July 2006, it was announced that she had suffered a miscarriage.[40] On 29 June 2007, Price gave birth to her third child, a daughter named Princess Tiaamii Crystal Esther Andre.[41]

In December 2007, Price underwent surgery in the U.S. to reduce the size of her breast implants and also had rhinoplasty. However, she was not happy with the results of her breast implants, so returned to Beverly Hills, California in July 2008 for corrective surgery. She returned to the UK five days later, showing off much smaller breasts, a size 32C.[42]

On 15 May 2009, Andre and Price announced that they were separating after three and a half years of marriage.[43][44]

In a TV interview with Piers Morgan in July 2009, Price claimed that their break-up was partly due to Andre's jealousy over her relationship with dressage trainer Andrew Gould, which she claimed was entirely platonic. However the final nail came when she was photographed in a Bristol nightclub after they had agreed that they would not go out without each other. She also revealed that she had recently miscarried.[45]

As of July 2009, Price has been dating MMA fighter and former Hollyoaks actor Alex Reid.[46]

In September 2009, while refuting tabloid reports that Alex Reid had been involved in an alleged simulated rape scene in the film Killer Bitch, Price claimed that she had previously been raped by a "famous celebrity", but had not reported the incident. After making the claim it was reported that she was contacted by Suffolk Police, despite Price's insistence that she would "absolutely never" reveal who the attacker was.[47] However, the force revealed that they had not contacted Price: "No allegation of rape has been made and Miss Price will not be making a statement to police."[48]
