One of the Hebrew terms which, in a broad sense, was applied to a Jewish Community (the others were edah and kahal; from the later Middle Ages the term also acquired the more restricted religious meaning of a Jewish congregation, i.e., the membership of a specific Synagogue. Western Sephardi congregations often incorporate "K.K." (Kahal Kadosh, "Holy Congregation") in their official names---K.K. Talmud Torah (Amsterdam), K.K. Sha'ar ha-Shamayim (London), and K.K. Shearith Israel (New York).
