Biography

Keith Caputo (born December 4, 1973) is best known as the singer of alternative metal group Life of Agony. He has also been active as a solo artist and has released several albums under his own name. In 1993, Life of Agony released their debut album River Runs Red, and singer Caputo's expressive voice played an important part in its success. After five years and three albums, however, Caputo left the group to start a solo career in 1997. Life of Agony tried to continue without him, recruiting ex-Ugly Kid Joe member Whitfield Crane, but when it turned out that they weren't able to successfully replace the singer, the group called it quits after a year. Caputo, on the other hand, created a new band called Absolute Bloom, but the group dissolved quickly. He moved to Amsterdam and recorded his first solo album, Died Laughing, in 2000, a record that wasn't what Life of Agony fans were expecting, but which showcased his considerable songwriting skills. A second solo effort, Perfect Little Monsters, followed in 2002.

In 2003, he helped the Brazilian industrial metal band Freax, which had been active from 1983 to the early '90s, with their reunion and the release of their first album, simply called Freax. The same year, Caputo reunited with his former Life of Agony bandmates for a number of reunion shows, which eventually resulted in a new album by the group called Broken Valley, which they released in 2005. After a 2004 live album (Live Monsters) and a contribution to the Roadrunner United project in 2005 (where he worked with Slipknot's Joey Jordison on the song "Tired 'N Lonely"), he released a new solo album called Hearts Blood on Your Dawn in 2006. Caputo distributed the record himself through his website, and via digital downloads and concert sales. After guesting on albums by Within Temptation, Both Worlds, and Type O Negative, the singer started work on his next solo album, 2008's A Fondness for Hometown Scars. ~ Christian Genzel, All Music Guide

Career

Caputo started Life of Agony in 1989 with his cousin and guitarist Joey Z.. After signing with Roadrunner Records, they debuted with the 1993 album River Runs Red. Shortly after the release of a third album in 1997, Caputo claimed that his heart was no longer in the type of music they performed and departed from the group.

After leaving the group, Caputo formed Absolute Bloom, but they broke up in July 1998 and he returned to his native blanch.

Later, Caputo helped to re-form the Brazilian band Freax, which had broken up over ten years earlier. They developed a self-titled album in 2003.

Caputo also worked extensively on a solo career in this time with two studio albums under his belt.

On January 3 and 4th, 2003, the original line-up of Life of Agony reunited for two sold-out shows at New York's Irving Plaza. The reunion resulted in several more shows and appearances on European festivals, as well as the recording of 2005's Broken Valley, the band's first new material since 1997.

In 2003, Caputo formed a line-up consisting of New York musicians Mike Shaw (Bass) and Dan Platt (guitars) along with Dutch musicians Jochem Van Rooijen (drums) and Jack Pisters (lead guitars) toured and recorded what would become "Live Monsters>'

In 2005, Caputo provided vocals for the song "Tired N' Lonely" off Roadrunner United: The All-Star Sessions.

On May 1, 2006, Keith Caputo released his third solo album Hearts Blood On Your Dawn which is not available in the stores, but at his live shows, via mailorder through his website, www.keithcaputo.com, and in the iTunes Store.

In 2007, Caputo recorded his fourth solo album, A Fondness For Hometown Scars, which includes a guest appearance by Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) on trumpet, amongst others. He is currently (8/08) touring in support of this release, with a band composed of Dutch musicians Ryan Oldcastle (guitars), Axel van Oort (bass guitar), and Jochem van Rooijen (drums). Having finished the U.S. leg of this tour, they recommence performances throughout Europe in September, and October, 2008. The album was produced by Martyn LeNoble, and was released in Europe in April 2008 by Dutch label Suburban Records.

He is a guest singer on Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation's track "What Have You Done", the first single (and second track) from their 2007 album, The Heart of Everything.

Keith also guested on the track "Free Speech (Will Cost You)" on the album Memory Rendered Visible by the band Both Worlds released on Roadrunner Records. He also provided additional backing vocals on Type O Negative's release Bloody Kisses.

Personal life

Much of the lyrics in Caputo's songs reflect on his rough childhood and other aspects of his life. His mother died of a heroin overdose when he was an infant. This had caused speculation that he, too, had sunk into the drug scene; however, Caputo dismisses such claims. Life of Agony songs "Heroin Dreams" & "The Day He Died" focus on Caputo's father whom he lost to a heroin overdose in early 2002. "The Day He Died" was written after the death of his father.
