According to the Cleveland Clinic antihistamines (Benadryl, Claritin, Tavist, to name a few well known brands) "are medications that prevent symptoms of sneezing, itching, runny nose and possibly congestion by blocking histamine receptors" (Cleveland Clinic web site 11/10/2008).
You can take an antihistamine if you are experiencing these symptoms if they are allergy related. Additionally, you may find it helpful to discuss options with your physician and discuss suplementing your treatment with a prescription nasal inhaled steroid like Flonaze (Fluticasone Propionate Nasal Spray). There are also several antihistamine eye drops that are helpful in relieving very itchy eyes such as Patanol (olopatadine) or Zaditor (ketotifen fumarate opthalmic solution). These are very effective eye drops for relieving itching eyes caused by allergens. If you have more questions your doctor, or a competent pharmacist can answer any questions you may have.
