Publishing: delete, as words or lines from the text of copy or photographs, drawings, or illustrations from a story, or an entire story from a publication. A copy for publication that contains the markings of the work to be "killed" is called a kill copy. If a free-lance story has been accepted for publication in a magazine and then has been deleted, some publishers will pay the writer a kill fee.

Printing: break down a printing plate after a run or when the plate is no longer necessary to reproduce the copy with which it was set. A client will issue a kill order to the printer when the plate is no longer required.

Radio or television production: turn off a light, cut a sound or picture, or delete words, lines, scenes, or entire programs from the broadcast schedule. See also cancel; credit cancellation; kill bad name.
