Kislovodsk (kēsləvôtsk') [Rus.,=sour water], city (1989 pop. 114,000), S European Russia, in the N Caucasus Mts. It is a famous health resort with mineral springs, sanatoriums, and a physico-therapeutical institute. Kislovodsk was founded in 1803.

Kislovodsk (Russian: Кислово́дск) is a city in Stavropol Krai, Russia. It lies in the North Caucasian region of Russia, between the Black and Caspian seas. The closest airport is located in the city of Mineralnye Vody. Population: 129,788 (2002 Census);[3] 114,414 (1989 Census).[4]

Kislovodsk (lit. sour waters) was founded in 1803 as a military station. It is named after the many mineral springs around the city of Narzan type. Kislovodsk is a spa town. Other notable spa towns in the vicinity include Yessentuki and Pyatigorsk.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Kislovodsk as a fashionable spa attracted many musicians, artists, and members of the Russian aristocracy. Several of the events in Mikhail Lermontov's novel A Hero Of Our Time are set in Kislovodsk.

The most famous native of Kislovodsk is Nobel Prize winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Nikolai Yaroshenko's memorial house is open to the public.
