[Usenet; poss.: fr.: DEC slang for a full software distribution, as opposed to a patch or upgrade] A source software distribution that has been packaged in such a way that it can (theoretically) be unpacked and installed according to a series of steps using only standard Unix tools, and entirely documented by some reasonable chain of references from the top-level README file. The more general term distribution may imply that special tools or more stringent conditions on the host environment are required.

A small unfretted fiddle, generally with four strings, used from the 16th century to the 19th. There were two main types: pear- or boat-shaped, with a vaulted back, and viol- or violin-shaped, with a slightly arched back and a long neck. The kit was probably derived from the rebec; early examples are often elaborately carved or decorated.

The tuning was generally in 5ths, sometimes at violin pitch but more often a 4th or 5th higher or even an octave if there were only three strings. The French names (poche, pochette) imply that it could be carried in the pocket, and the German term Tanzmeistergeige indicates its use by dancing-masters. The kit was played at all social levels; performers played violin pieces or popular tunes, as little music was composed specifically.
