If somebody gave you an object to look after, then you may not use it without their explicit permission. Even if you are certain that the owner does not mind, it's better not to use it. This is forbidden even if the object will not suffer any wear and tear from being used. Letting other people use the object is absolutely forbidden. Source: Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 188:2
