Transylvania is a region of western and central Romania. It is quite large, taking up about a third of the country. Despite its long history and rich culture, it is chiefly known in the West as the home of Dracula in the novel by Bram Stoker.
Transylvania is where Dracula supposedly lived.
Major towns include (German names given in brackets. The region was part of Austria-Hungary till 1918):
- Cluj Napoca (Klausenburg)
- Brasov (Kronstadt)
- Sibiu (Hermannstadt)
- Sighisoara (Schässburg - birthplace of Vlad Tepes)
- Medias (Mediasch)
- Alba Iulia (Karlsburg)
Sibiu was the European Capital of Culture 2007.
I have visited the region twice. Sibiu and perhaps even more, Sighisoara, are among the most beautiful old towns I have seen anywhere. A visit is highly recommended!
