Biography

Kristin Davis first earned recognition as the pretentiously rich "schemer" she played on Fox's Melrose Place in the mid-'90s. As Brooke, she was constantly creating problems for the more regular characters, and just a year after gaining full-time character status, she had to be written off the show because of viewer dissatisfaction. However, doe-eyed Davis would find an abundance of work on television and in film, and demonstrate more versatility than she had as the "meanie" on Melrose. She was born on February 24, 1965, in Boulder, CO. After moving to Columbia, SC, with her family, she attended Rutgers University. She then moved to New York City, where she worked in theater and commercials for some time. In order to work on Melrose Place, starting in 1994, she relocated to Los Angeles. Davis made many television miniseries and movie appearances after her bout with Melrose Place, including appearances on ER and General Hospital. She had a bit part in Nine Months in 1995, and was featured in a TNT made-for-TV movie, The Heidi Chronicles, also starring Jamie Lee Curtis, that same year. In 1998, she had a small part in Sour Grapes, a comedy by Seinfeld writer Larry David. She then starred in two television motion pictures: Atomic Train in 1999, as Megan Seger, and Take Me Home: The John Denver Story in 2000, as Annie Denver, and co-starring with Chad Lowe. Also in 2000, she starred in the feature film Blacktop, and in 2001, appeared in a TV movie called Three Days with comedian Tim Meadows.

On the HBO series Sex and the City, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Davis played the innocent and adorable Charlotte York, a sweet and sensitive counterpart to the more blunt crassness of the program's three other female main characters. A striking contrast to the role she played on Melrose Place, Charlotte has provided Davis with a more diverse character range within the genre of drama-comedy on television. ~ Sarah Sloboda, All Movie Guide

Early life and education

Davis was born in Boulder, Colorado.[2] An only child, her parents divorced when she was a baby. She was adopted by her stepfather, University of South Carolina psychology professor Keith Davis,[3] after he married her mother, Dorothy, a university data analyst, in 1968.[4] She had three half sisters from her father's first marriage.[5] Early in her childhood, she and her parents moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where her father served as provost and teaches psychology at the University of South Carolina.

Davis wanted to be an actress since age 10, when she was cast in a community theatre production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Davis lived in South Carolina until she graduated from A.C. Flora High School in 1983. She then moved to New Jersey, where she attended Rutgers University.[5]

Career

Television

After graduation in 1987, Davis moved to New York and waited tables before opening a yoga studio with a friend. In 1995, she landed the role of Brooke Armstrong Campbell on Melrose Place. She left the show after one year when producers found that viewers disliked her character. Davis also had roles in other television series including Friends and Seinfeld.

In 1998, Davis was cast as Charlotte York in Sex and the City and remained an integral cast member until the series ended in 2004. She received an Emmy nomination for her role in the final season.

She has also hosted the VH1 show 200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons. In 2005, Davis starred in a television pilot entitled Soccer Moms in which she and Gina Torres star as suburban mothers who moonlight as private detectives.

Also she starred as Miss Spider in Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Kids and its spinoff Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends.

Films

Films include The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D, opposite David Arquette and George Lopez; the Walt Disney film The Shaggy Dog, opposite Tim Allen, and Deck The Halls, opposite Matthew Broderick. She performed in ABC Family channel's Christmas movie Three Days in 2001, and in a commercial for Head and Shoulders shampoo.

Davis appeared in 2008's Sex and the City feature film, under the direction of executive producer Michael Patrick King.[6] On October 15, 2008, TV Guide reported that Davis has signed on to co-star in Couples Retreat, a comedy chronicling four couples who partake in therapy sessions at a tropical island resort. Jon Favreau, who also wrote the script, will play her husband.[7]

Additional ventures

Shortly after the wide release of the Sex and the City feature film, in June 2008, Belk, the nation's largest privately-owned department store chain, announced a partnership with Davis. The arrangement with the retailer includes an upcoming ladies' apparel and accessories line which debuted during fall 2008 in 125 store locations and online, with eventual plans for expanding availability to other store locations. In Belk's press release regarding the product line launch, Davis cited her upbringing in South Carolina as part of the inspiration in working with the chain.[8]

Personal life

Davis is a recovering alcoholic.[9] She says as part of her southern upbringing, she was introduced to alcohol early: "Alcohol freed me. I was really shy and I didn't know how to come out of my shell. I drank for the same reason I loved acting. I wanted to feel things and express myself and be free. And I'm not naturally that way."[10] She went sober in her mid-20s:[5] “I miss it. You don’t go to rehab and then suddenly it goes away."[11]

Having admitted a preference for dating actors, her ex-boyfriend list is high-profile and extensive, including: Alec Baldwin, David Duchovny, Jeff Goldblum, Steve Martin and Liev Schreiber. She says: "If I had one wish for myself, it would be to fall in love. That's asking for trouble, but that's the truth."

Davis currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Davis has been rumored to be seeing NYC filmmaker, Nicholas Leone.
