Biography

Mancunian downtempo/drum'n'bass duo Lamb were one of the first groups to add a lyrics-based vocalist to steadfastly jungle-based productions. Unlike other vocal-based groups (such as Everything But the Girl and the Sneaker Pimps) who dabbled in rolling breaks as a quiet accompaniment to a clearly dominant vocal lead, Lamb dwelled in brash musical contrasts and, occasionally, contradictions that made their songs as musically complex and exploratory as they are vocally catchy. Formed in 1994 by producer Andrew Barlow and vocalist Louise Rhodes (the former an in-house engineer for So What management, the latter a daughter of folk-singer parents and a budding songstress), Lamb nailed a contract with Mercury subsidiary Fontana almost straight out of the gate.

The group's calling card, the "Cotton Wool" single, already showed field-leaders such as Gerald Simpson and Fila Brazillia were on their side (each contributed a remix). But if anything it was the untouched title track that illustrated Lamb's commitment to keeping the music interesting (the track rows along on a thick double-bass sample and absolutely brutalizing drum sequences) while filling it out with a big dose of tunefulness. An additional single ("Gold") followed, with Lamb's self-titled debut released in the fall of 1996 to widespread acclaim. Like the previous singles, much of Lamb explores song-oriented deployments of jungle, but the album also adds elements of downtempo and ambient-ish electro-jazz as well. Rhodes went on to lend her vocals to Sheffield legends 808 State's Don Solaris LP (on the track "Azura"), and the success of Lamb's debut also brought a fair amount of remix work their way. The pair also added touring to their repertoire (Lamb's release was followed by a European tour with labelmates Galliano), combining their electronics-heavy productions with live instrumentalists. Second album Fear of Fours appeared in 1999, and consolidated the band's appeal with forward-thinking electronica listeners. Another inventive record, What Sound, landed in 2001, although American audiences were forced to wait two years to hear it in a quietly released version on Koch. Between Darkness and Wonder followed in 2003, and one year later Barlow helmed a volume in the chillout mixtape series Back to Mine. ~ Sean Cooper, All Music Guide

Lamb were an electronic music duo from Manchester, England, known for their trip hop and drum and bass influenced sound. The duo comprised producer Andy Barlow, also known as the "Hipoptimist", and singer-songwriter Lou Rhodes. They received acclaim throughout the United Kingdom, Europe (particularly Portugal), Australia and the Americas, especially for their hit singles "Gorecki" and "Gabriel".

Biography

Lamb's core members were Barlow and Rhodes, although the band subsequently expanded to include bassist Jon Thorne, Icelandic guitarist Oddur Mar Runnarson, and Danish drummer Nikolaj Bjerre. London-based string trio Chi 2 Strings and trumpet player Kevin Davy were frequent guest musicians; Chi 2 Strings co-wrote several songs on Lamb's fourth album.

They released their first album, the self-titled Lamb in September 1996, and followed this up with another three albums and a cache of singles over the next eight years, culminating in the release of a greatest hits album, "Best Kept Secrets", in June 2004. Lamb performed what was billed as their final live appearance at the Paradiso in Amsterdam in September 2004. This performance was filmed for a planned live DVD release; its release was expected in 2005, but as of March 2007 it has not appeared. The release has now been planned for early 2008.[1] While the band members have not ruled out the return of Lamb at some point in the future, both have been working on a variety of solo projects. Rhodes released her debut solo album "Beloved One" on her own label Infinite Bloom in 2006, while Barlow has been working on a project called Hoof (together with Oddur Runasson, among others, who also appeared on Rhodes' solo debut), which has performed live a number of times but so far not released an album.

Although getting their start in Manchester, Lamb are more commonly associated with the Bristol-based trip hop sound that was popular during the nineties. Aside from trip hop, their musical style is a distinctive mixture of jazz, dub, breaks and drum and bass, with a strong vocal element and, in their later works especially, some acoustic influences. While they were a hit phenomenon in the UK, they found limited success in other parts of the world, despite securing distribution. Portugal was an exception, however; the band achieved crossover success in the country, including one major number one hit with "Gabriel," the lead single from 2001's What Sound.

The band are known for the experimental work they produce, a distinctive production style, Lou's passionate lyrical style, and their artistic videos, which draw on influences ranging from Cyberpunk through George Lucas' THX 1138 to Zen Buddhism. The 2004 DVD The Fall & Rise of the Fools Ark, a roadmovie by Dutch duo Dadara and Jesse for which Lamb and the Hipoptimist provided the music, is an animated roadmovie in the style of Monty Python and Yellow Submarine.

By far, their best-known track to date is "Gorecki," from their eponymous debut album. The song is inspired by Henryk Górecki's Third Symphony, the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, although in Portugal, "Gabriel" is far more well-known. Part of the lyrics to Gorecki were used by Baz Luhrman for some of Satine's final lines in Moulin Rouge!, and the track is rumoured to have been covered by Nicole Kidman.

As Rhodes and Barlow are private people, little is known about their personal lives. Rhodes has two sons, Reuben and Solomon, and she lives in a commune near London.

Lou Rhodes released her 2nd solo CD, Bloom in September 2007. That same month she was named the Auralgasms artist of the month.
