A thin scale, plate, or layer of bone or tissue, as in the gills of a bivalve mollusk or around the minute vascular canals in bone.

A reinforced concrete, metal, or wood member joined with similar members in a crisscross pattern so as to form an arch or vault.


 

A thin layer, membrane, or plate of tissue. For example, the concentric ring of hard bone in compact bone.

1. a thin scale or plate, as of bone.
2. a medicated disk or wafer to be inserted under the eyelid.

  • circumferential l. — one of the bony plates that underlie the periosteum and endosteum.
  • concentric l. — haversian lamella (see below).
  • endosteal l. — one of the bony plates lying beneath the endosteum.
  • ground l. — interstitial lamella (see below).
  • haversian l. — one of the concentric bony plates surrounding a haversian canal.
  • intermediate l. — one of the bony plates that fill in between the haversian systems; called also interstitial lamella.
  • interstitial l. — see intermediate lamella (above).
  • intrasinusal l. — incomplete partitions which divide the frontal sinus of the horse into a number of communicating diverticula.
