meaning 'deplorable, regrettable', is correctly pronounced with the stress on the first syllable, not the second (though either is acceptable in American English).

The latest victim of the London bombings is 27-year-old Jean Charles de Menezes, who was shot to death in an Underground station by police who suspected he was about to perpetrate a terror attack:
