For Lane College, the past is prologue. The small, private liberal arts school was established in 1882 by the Christian Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E.) Church to provide educational opportunities -- particularly in the areas of teaching and preaching -- for newly-freed slaves. Originally called C.M.E. High School, it was renamed Lane College (after its founder Bishop Isaac Lane) in 1896. Throughout its history, the preparation of professional educators has been a primary focus; however, the college also offers undergraduate degrees in such disciplines as computer science, business, and criminal justice. Lane College enrolls 800-1,000 students annually.
