It would not really be true to say that they divide the European
Union. There are now 27 countries in the European Union, so there
are a lot of languages. Much of the business of the European Union
is done through French and English, but all languages are used.
Some countries have different languages within them and languages
spoken by minorities, but even some of the smaller languages have
official recognition even though there are not many people speaking
them in those countries.
