(DOD) Any of a number of agencies (outside the Department of Defense) chartered and empowered to enforce US laws in the following jurisdictions: The United States, a state (or political subdivision) of the United States, a territory or possession (or political subdivision) of the United States, or within the borders of a host nation. Also called LEA.

A law enforcement agency (LEA) is any agency which enforces the law. This may be a local or state police, federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). It could also refer to a national police force such as the Serious Organised Crime Agency. Also, it can be used to describe an international organization such as Europol or Interpol. This is a list of law enforcement agencies, organized by continent and then by country.

Law enforcement is carried out by 5 types of agency - special police forces (whose jurisdiction generally extends nationwide), non-police law enforcement agencies (who have limited powers relating to their specific duties), military police (whose jurisdiction extends only to members of the armed forces), territorial police forces (whose jurisdiction extends to the country they are attested in) and a number of miscellaneous constabularies (whose jurisdiction is limited to certain areas of land).
