French Literature Companion:

le Mot de Cambronne

Cambronne, le Mot de. The word euphemistically thus referred to, ‘Merde!’, is said to have been spoken by the Napeolonic general Cambronne, when called on by the English at Waterloo to surrender against overwhelming odds. The nobler version of his response is: ‘La garde meurt et ne se rend pas.’
