A learning curve represents the rate at which a person learns a new skill or acquires knowledge over time. It typically shows an initial steep learning phase followed by a gradual leveling off as proficiency increases. Understanding the learning curve for a particular task can help in predicting how quickly someone will become proficient at it.

The pattern of learning the strongest is known as the "learning curve." It represents the rate at which a person learns new skills or knowledge over time. As learning progresses, the curve typically shows a rapid initial improvement followed by a more gradual increase in proficiency.

The learning curve is reverse 'J' shaped. Its shape indicates that the cost of production rises with rise in quantity produced but to an extent. After that point it stops increasing. It happens because the management or the production department learns to control the cost of production from past mistakes or experience or by reffering previous data. so, the learning to control the cost has named this curve as learning curve. when the cost stops rising and it stabilises then the curve becomes a straight line acordingly.....and it forms the shape of reverse 'J'.

Estimates based on learning curve theory may not apply if the tasks being performed are highly variable or complex, if there are frequent changes in processes or technology, or if the workforce is not stable. In these cases, the learning curve assumptions of consistent improvement with repeated practice may not hold true, leading to inaccurate estimates.

Learning Curve
Learning Curve measures the relation between increases in per worker productivity (leading to decrease in per unit labor cost at fixed prices) associated with an improvement in labor skills from on the job experience. In other words, Learning Effect leads to fall in the cost of production per unit because with the increased involvement in the production process Labor and Managers become more and more familiar with the production process. This leads to improvement in their efficiency level.
So it is involved with one input-labor
Experience Curve
Production phenomenon where unit costs decline as volume increases. This result from a wide variety of factors including lower fixed costs per unit, an increase in skills associated with quantity production, and generally lower material costs. This is involved all the inputs.
Actually Learning curve impact is also part of Experience Curve. So in simple, Learning curve is a Narrow concept while Experience curve is a broader concept

The relationship between experience or practice and advancement in performance or efficiency over time is described by the idea of the "learning curve." Certain prerequisites must be met before learning curve analysis can be used, including:
Repeated tasks: Learning curve analysis works best when used on activities that are repeated and necessitate the same information and skills over and over again.
Consistency: The activities under analysis must be consistent in terms of their degree of difficulty, complexity, and skill and knowledge requirements.
Stable environment: Throughout the learning process, the setting in which the tasks are carried out should be steady and consistent. The learning curve may change as a result of adjustments to the tools, materials, or processes.

Actually, it has little to do with the learner and more to do with how much there is to be learned. The steeper the learning curve, the more things one has to learn in a shorter amount of time; or the faster the increase in difficulty of the concepts to be mastered.
- - - - -
Additional: The metaphor "steep learning curve" originally came as a positive reference. A steep learning curve meant that one became quite proficient with a minimum amount of effort/time. It LATER came to be used in the opposite sense - as a negative reference to something difficult to learn (which actually is a shallow, not steep, curve!).
A learning curve is shown as a graph of "amount of learning" in the Y axis and the "amount of time or effort" in the X direction. A relatively 'normal' learning curve would be a sloping 's' curve, with its tail starting at the lower left and progressing to the upper right where the head of the s lies.
In common (technically incorrect) usage, "steep learning curve" is meant to indicate that to learn the subject/technique takes a long time and is difficult.

A learning curve at an 80% rate of learning means that each time a task is repeated, there is an 80% improvement in efficiency or skill. This suggests a steep and rapid mastery of the task with each iteration. A person or team following an 80% learning curve would see significant progress and skill development in a short amount of time.

In a business sense, it usually means a new employee is not quite keeping up with the 'learning curve' required to perform a particular job.
In other instances it would mean 'off the pace' or 'behind schedule'.
The origin of the phrase refers to the statistical bell shaped curve also called the normal probability distribution; where to be 'behind the curve' is to be analogously in area of the graph to the left of the bell curve, to be 'ahead of the curve' analogously in the area of the graph to the right of the bell curve.
