Leipzig is cosmopolitan city located in the German state of Saxony. Historically one of Germany’s cultural centers, Leipzig has undergone a rebirth in the aftermath of German reunification.
When in Leipzig, you can visit St. Thomas Church, the place where Johann Sebastian Bach earned a living as a choir director. In fact, the church is still home to a renowned boys choir that performs there throughout the year, and Leipzig holds Bachfest each June to celebrate the legacy of the famous composer.
Also worth a look is The Altes Rathaus, or old City Hall, a museum devoted to Leipzig’s history. Moving outdoors, the Leipzig Botanical Garden is the oldest botanical garden in Germany. Housing over 7,000 plant species, the 3.5 hectare garden traces its origins as far back as 1542.
When dining in Leipzig, you may want to try Auerbachs Keller, the oldest and best known restaurant in Leipzig -- it was actually featured in a scene from Goethe’s Faust.
