leukotrienes

 

Endogenous chemicals derived from arachidonic acid. They are released from mast cells as part of the inflammation response. They attract white blood cells (see leucocyte) to sites of tissue damage and cause smooth muscle to contract. Large amounts are released during an allergic reaction or asthmatic attack when their effects on the smooth muscle can make it very difficult to breathe.
