Liberalism in the United States usually means that its adherents are concerned about the right of the individual to make his own choices and express his opinions. So freedom of speech an of the Press is important, as is the separation of church and state, right to due process, and equality under the law.

Modern liberalism in the United States includes issues such as same-sex marriage, the right to abortion, voting rights for all adult citizens, civil rights and protection of the environment. Modern liberalism also holds that a nation's Government should pursue an active policy to protect the Constitutional right of 'freedom from want'.
