noun
Stroking with the tongue. There are three kinds of licking in animals: (1) licking of inanimate objects including soil and trees, i.e. pica, which is usually interpreted as an expression of malnutrition; (2) grooming licking of self; (3) abrasive licking of self, often at the same spot. Examples are the ‘mad itch’ of bovine pseudorabies and the production of acral lick dermatitis in dogs.
