I have a sunfire GT that has a collapsed lifter, not for sure how many just yet I think 2 Hubby thinks 1. we don't quite have the cam out. we do have a manual, but who can understand those sometimes. we are going to have to lift the engine to take the timing casing off(not drop it) just to get the top off to get to the lifters. 1st Q do we have to pull the CV axels to get the block to raise? 2nd Q what would have casued this lifter to collapse, so we can fix this while we are in there. 3rd Q the book is great on letting us know about the seals. what type of seals are needed to finish this JOB (and I mean a JOB) 4th Q any help on this subject will be greatly apriciated and taken to heart. 5thQ this care has 100,000 miles on it (great condition and purchasd for 500.00) should we replace all the lifters(around 300.00-800.00 Im seeing on some parts web sites) would there be anything else you would replace before we reasemble this engine, would hate to break this side ways bad boy again....(why did they do that any ways??? crazy ppl....)

Then, remove the pushrods and any necessary components that may obstruct the lifters. Carefully lift the lifters out of their bores, taking care not to drop any debris into the engine.

It has nothing to do with the lifters getting use to your driving style. Lifters rarely loosen up. Lifters wear over time, thus causing the gap to widen, creating lifter clatter. On solid lifters, that is why they must be adjusted periodically. On hydraulic lifters, this is not necessary, as they automatically adjust for the gap due to wear, if they were installed and adjusted correctly in the first place.
