Personal Information

Born Shad Gregory Moss on March 9, 1987, in Columbus, OH; son of Teresa Caldwell.

Career

Appeared on stage with Snoop Doggy Dogg, who gave him name Lil' Bow Wow, 1993; toured with Snoop Doggy Dogg; signed by producer Jermaine Dupri to So So Def imprint of Sony label, 1997; released debut album, Beware of Dog, 2000; Doggy Bag, 2001; changed stage name to Bow Wow; starred in film Like Mike, 2002.

Life's Work

Popular music at the turn of the millennium featured a plethora of teenage stars, and Lil' Bow Wow was hip-hop's unusually successful entrant in the teen pop competition. Lil' Bow Wow packed shopping malls with young female fans after the 2000 release of his first album, Beware of Dog--even though he was only four-foot seven inches tall and weighed a mere 85 pounds. His success has been attributed to both his personal charisma--he reminded some observers of the young Michael Jackson--and to his purely musical talents. Lil' Bow Wow, observed Jason Birchmeier of the All Music Guide, "miraculously raps better than most MCs in the industry despite his youth."

Lil' Bow Wow was born Shad Gregory Moss on March 9, 1987, in Columbus, Ohio, and was raised in nearby Reynoldsburg. He was a middle child, a brother between two sisters. It didn't take long for his musical talents to surface. "He'd pick up my kitchen utensils and combs and brushes and start rapping," his mother, Teresa Caldwell, told Jet. By the time he was three it was clear that Shad (the name still used by his friends) was something special, and his mother began to enter him in talent shows around the Columbus area. He began performing under the name of Kid Gangsta.

Met Snoop Doggy Dogg

In 1993, at the tender age of six, Kid Gangsta became Lil' Bow Wow after he met rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg (later Snoop Dogg) at a Columbus concert during the latter's The Chronic tour, and was invited on stage to perform. "He reminded me of myself as a kid--his energy, his look," the older rapper told Jet. "He was a little me. Instead of naming him Lil' Dogg, I named him Lil' Bow Wow." Lil' Bow Wow went on tour with Snoop Doggy Dogg as an opening act, and at that point the youngster went from being a novelty act to having a chance for major success as a child star.

That success didn't come right away, however, even though Lil' Bow Wow made a guest appearance on Snoop's wildly successful Doggystyle album. Lil' Bow Wow, with backing from Snoop Doggy Dogg, signed a deal with Death Row Records, but the heavily gangster-oriented label was unsure of how to promote its pint-sized musical acquisition, and several recording sessions at Death Row came to nothing. But with his mother as his manager, Lil' Bow Wow managed to maintain the semblance of a normal, well-grounded childhood. He remained a strong student in school, having won a junior-high-level award from the Ohio Interscholastic Writing League.

Lil' Bow Wow's contribution to the Doggystyle album was expletive-laced, but Atlanta producer Jermaine Dupri envisioned a different path for the youngster and signed him to his So So Def label (an imprint of Sony) in 1997. Dupri explained to the Daily Telegraph (London), "These days in rap, kids don't have any role models. I knew it was time for him to come out, because little girls from 11 to 16 don't have anyone they can claim as their own." Dupri began writing material for Lil' Bow Wow that included no profanity at all.

Released Beware of Dog

With the hip-hop sections of CD stores featuring a sea of parental warning stickers, the move was a brilliant one. Lil' Bow Wow immediately stood out from the crowd when Beware of Dog was released in September of 2000. Pictured on the cover with a boxer dog that looked genial rather than threatening, Lil' Bow Wow was, in the words of an Entertainment Weekly critic, "sunny and scrubbed--a cherub in street braids." According to Birchmeier, the album delivers "sure-fire pop rap: 'Bounce with Me' is the sort of feel-good song destined to be a summer anthem."

By the summer of 2001, Lil' Bow Wow was a teen sensation. When he undertook his Scream tour, accurately named in view of the reactions his appearances elicited from teenage girls, tickets for major venues sold out in less than an hour. The Evergreen Plaza shopping mall in Chicago had to be shut down for the day after girls fainted from excitement during a promotional Lil' Bow Wow appearance. The rapper generally lapped up the attention, but occasionally seemed a bit overwhelmed. "I really thought it was crazy," he told Jet.

Image Distributed on Book Cover

"Bounce with Me" gained added exposure from its inclusion on Dupri's soundtrack for the Martin Lawrence film Big Momma's House, and Lil' Bow Wow's image appeared on a free promotional book cover given out to millions of students by the makers of the soft drink Dr. Pepper. The song landed the youngster in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest rapper to have a number one hit. He also performed with superstar Madonna at the beginning of the 2001 Grammy awards. With publicity like that, Lil' Bow Wow was well placed to match the multimillion-copy sales of Beware of Dog with his next release, Doggy Bag. That album, released a week before Christmas in 2001, reportedly sold over a million copies by early February of 2002, and seemed well on its way to equaling or eclipsing the sales of its predecessor.

Lil' Bow Wow, who has a pet box turtle named Snoop, moved in the usual rap-star fashion to diversify his activities in 2002. He prepared to launch a clothing line, Lil' Bow Wear, and in the summer of that year made his first starring appearance on film in the family-oriented comedy Like Mike. The rapper played an orphan who finds a magic pair of athletic shoes that might once have belonged to basketball superstar Michael Jordan. The shoes turn him into an NBA superstar, and the five-foot-tall Bow Wow (he dropped the "Lil'" in 2002) announced plans to play in the NBA himself.

That proclaimed ambition exemplified one of the keys to Bow Wow's ongoing popularity--he has the gift of gab. "I just always know what to think and what to say next," he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. On tour in the summer of 2002, when he was asked by that paper where he planned to be in five years, he responded, "I don't know; I feel like I've done everything. The only thing I'm missing is a Grammy. I've got the keys to five cities I've never heard of. I have a street named after me. I've accomplished more in the last five years than a lot of people." Despite that sentiment, it was obvious that rap's child star displayed a quickness and ease that should allow him to continue to master new challenges.

Biography

At only age 13, Bow Wow made his rap debut on Beware of Dog (2000), a double-platinum Top Ten hit, and though he struggled to rival such breakout success in the years that followed, he persevered impressively, maturing as an artist (as well as a man) and releasing a series of albums that met varying degrees of commercial success. In addition to his music career, Bow Wow also found regular work in Hollywood, beginning with Like Mike (2002), a star vehicle for which he recorded a soundtrack. Successive film appearances included Johnson Family Vacation (2004), Roll Bounce (2005), and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006).

Born Shad Gregory Moss on March 9, 1987, in Columbus, OH, Bow Wow began his rap career as Lil Bow Wow, a moniker acquired during his brief relationship with Death Row Records, then the home of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. A subsequent relationship with Jermaine Dupri and his So So Def label proved more fruitful for Bow Wow. Under the guidance of Dupri -- who had previously guided other kid rappers, namely Kris Kross and Da Brat, to mainstream success -- and songwriter/producer Bryan-Michael Cox, the young rapper was primed for success.

Bow Wow's debut single, "Bounce with Me," was released in summer 2000 and appeared on the soundtrack to the Eddie Murphy film Big Momma's House. The song featured the So So Def female R&B group Xscape and became a Top 20 hit in both the U.S. and U.K., charting number one on the stateside R&B and rap singles charts. Meanwhile, Bow Wow's debut album, Beware of Dog, also became a major hit, selling over two and a half million copies; its commercial success was partly due to the popular follow-up single "Bow Wow (That's My Name)," featuring Snoop Dogg, and a pair of subsequent minor hits, "Puppy Love" and "Ghetto Girls." Bow Wow's second album, Doggy Bag (2002), was another major success; it peaked at number six on Billboard's album chart, eventually going platinum, and it featured two strong singles, "Thank You" (which prominently samples the Cars' 1981 hit "I'm Not the One") and "Take Ya Home" (produced by the Neptunes during their prime).

Bow Wow broke off his relationship with Jermaine Dupri for his third album, Unleashed (2003). Released by Columbia, the album was a commercial disappointment, peaking at number three on the album chart yet selling less than a million copies in the long run. A couple well-charting singles did result, though -- "Let's Get Down," featuring Birdman, and "My Baby," featuring Jagged Edge -- and the album did boast some first-rate production work, including more beats by the Neptunes. Dupri resumed his executive production role for Bow Wow's next album, Wanted (2005), and good fortune resulted. The album went platinum, peaking at number three, and a pair of singles -- "Let Me Hold You," featuring Omarion, and "Like You," featuring Ciara (with whom he was romantically linked for a while) -- went Top Five.

The hits continued for Bow Wow in subsequent years. His fifth album, The Price of Fame (2006), included a few big ones: "Shortie Like Mine," featuring Chris Brown, "Outta My System," featuring T-Pain, and "I'm a Flirt," featuring R. Kelly. For Face Off (2007), he collaborated with one of his peers, Omarion, an R&B star and friend with whom he toured. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

Biography

Though he has since dropped the age restrictive "Lil'" for the more mature Bow Wow, this rapper-turned-actor stands tall on both stage and screen no matter what moniker he assumes. Born Shad Gregory Moss in Reynoldsburg, OH, Lil' Bow Wow dropped his first rhymes at the tender age of three, and after hooking up with producer Jermaine Dupri, the young rapper released his debut album, Beware of Dog, in 2000. The following year, he brought his vocal talents to the small screen in Carmen: A Hip Hopera. After releasing his 2001 sophomore album, Doggy Bag, Lil' Bow Wow made his feature debut in the action comedy All About the Benjamins. Leading-man status followed with a starring role as an orphan who discovers a pair of magical basketball shoes in Like Mike (2002), showing that the pint-sized rapper's skills in front of the camera rivaled those behind the microphone.

Following the release of his third album, Unleashed (2003), he returned to the screen in 2004 for the comedy Johnson Family Vacation; snagging the lead role in Director Malcolm D. Lee's nostalgic coming-of-age tale Roll Bounce the following year. Strapping on a pair of roller skates for the '70s-set family drama, Bow Wow's first leading role snagged impressive box-office totals in its first-weekend, indicating good things to come for the young rapper-actor hyphenate. 2006 would find the actor/hip-hopper adding the title of wheelman to his credits when he buckled-in for the rubber-burning sequel The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Early life

Bow Wow was born in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Teresa Caldwell and Alfonso Moss.[2] At age three, he became interested in music. Under the moniker "Kid Gangsta", he began rapping recreationally at age six; he was also a fan of N.W.A at that age.[3] One year later, in 1993, he performed at a concert in Los Angeles, and was noticed by rapper Snoop Dogg, who subsequently gave him a stage name, "Bow Wow".[4] Dr. Dre signed Bow Wow to Death Row Records.[1] Lil' Bow Wow then appeared on a skit on Snoop's debut Doggystyle, and on his music video of "Gin and Juice".[5]

Music career

As Lil' Bow Wow

In 1998, at the age of eleven, Bow Wow met record producer Jermaine Dupri, who helped shape his career. At the age of 13, in 2000 he debuted with Beware of Dog under the stage name Lil' Bow Wow. Its debut single "Bounce With Me", which featured girl group Xscape, was also featured on the film Big Momma's House.[1] "Bounce With Me" topped the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart and peaked at #20 on the Hot 100.[6] Other singles included "Bow Wow (That's My Name)" featuring Snoop Dogg, which also topped the rap chart,[6] "Puppy Love", and "Ghetto Girls". The soundtrack to the movie Wild Wild West featured his song "The Stick Up" with his mentor Jermaine Dupri. The Recording Industry Association of America certified Beware of Dog double platinum on March 5, 2001, signifying sales of two million copies.[7]

In 2002, his second album Doggy Bag was released with singles "Take Ya Home" (with Jagged Edge), which peaked at #1 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and "Thank You", #1 on the R&B chart.[6] Doggy Bag peaked at #11 on the Billboard 200 and #2 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart[8] and was certified platinum.[7] Lil' Bow Wow performed the track "Basketball" for the soundtrack of his film Like Mike; that song peaked at #1 on the R&B and #25 on the rap chart.[6]

As Bow Wow

Bow Wow dropped the "Lil" from his stage name in April 2002; he told MTV News: "I changed my name because I'm getting older now and it's too many Lil's."[9] The first album released under his new moniker was Unleashed in 2003. Its first single was "Let's Get Down," featuring Birdman, the founder of Cash Money Records, which reached #14 on the Hot 100 and #6 on the Hot Rap Tracks charts. The second single was then released, "My Baby", featuring Jagged Edge. Unlike his previous albums, this one was not produced under the mentorship of Jermaine Dupri.[1] Guest appearances include Jagged Edge, Birdman, Mario, and Amerie.[1] Unleashed was certified gold on September 25, 2003.[7] Bow Wow appeared on the remix of JoJo's single "Baby It's You" in 2004.

Wanted was released in 2005. Its first single was "Let Me Hold You", featuring Omarion, and peaked at #1 on the rap chart and #4 on the Hot 100. The next single, "Like You", featuring Ciara, coincided with the beginning of Bow Wow's relationship with the singer.[10] "Fresh Azimiz", featured J-Kwon and Jermaine Dupri, followed and peaked at #23 on the Hot 100 and #6 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart.[6] The album was certified platinum.[7] He also appeared on the remix of Dem Franchize Boyz' "I Think They Like Me", which peaked at #15 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the Hot Rap Tracks.

In 2006, The Price of Fame was released with the lead single "Shortie Like Mine", featuring Chris Brown, peaking at #9 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the Hot Rap Tracks.[6] "Outta My System", which featured T-Pain, reflected on Bow Wow's break-up with Ciara.[11] It peaked at #22 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the Rap chart.[6] The Price of Fame was certified gold.[7]

Bow Wow and Omarion released a collaborative album on December 11, 2007, Face Off. The first single was "Girlfriend," which peaked at #33 on the Hot 100. The second single was "Hey Baby (Jump Off)".[6]

In October 2008, for the U.S. presidential election, Bow Wow led a 15-city "Walk Across America" event to register new voters.[12] He released a mixtape title Half Man, Half Dog Vol. 1 that year. Half Man, Half Dog Vol. 2 was released as a sequel to the mixtape in February 2009.[13] New Jack City II, his sixth album, was released in March 2009 and his first album to include a Parental Advisory: Steven Roberts of MTV News observed that this album explored the "the influence of crack cocaine in inner-city communities" and featured such guests as Lil Wayne and T.I.[14] Three promo singles were released in late 2008: "Marco Polo" featuring Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, "Big Girls", and "Roc The Mic". The first official single, "You Can Get It All" featuring Johnta Austin, samples TLC's "Baby-Baby-Baby" and peaked at #55 on the Hot 100 and #9 on the Hot Rap Tracks.[6] On July 4, 2009 his new song "I Know I'm The Sh**" off his DJ Drama hosted Mixtape he makes a reference of him working on his new album "The Transition Of Shad Moss" and it is already in production. It is most likely that the album will be released in 2010 with the first single being "Dirty Girl" featuring T-Pain & Pitbull because of his youtube video of him finishing up and him calling it his "New Single".

On August 16, Bow Wow announced his signing to Cash Money Records, joining an all-star roster that already includes Drake, Lil Wayne and Birdman, among others. Further details regarding the deal and his forthcoming album were unknown at press time. [15]

Film career

Bow Wow has had guest appearances on Brandy's TV sitcom, Moesha, as well as The Steve Harvey Show. He made his major acting debut in the film Like Mike which was released on July 3, 2002, in which he starred as a young orphan who gets a shot at playing in the NBA. Before Like Mike he made a cameos in All About The Benjamins, and in "Carmen: A Hip Hopera." Bow Wow also co-starred with Cedric the Entertainer, Vanessa L. Williams, and Solange Knowles in Johnson Family Vacation. Since the success of Like Mike, Bow Wow has starred in several Hollywood films, including Roll Bounce and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. He has also made guest appearances on Smallville and Ugly Betty. He joined the cast for HBO's fifth season of Entourage as Charlie an up and coming comedian and Eric Murphy's newest client.[16] He is currently working on a new film called Hurricane Season.[17]
