In English, "Lina" is a shortened form of Angelina, Evangelina, or Carolina.
Lina is a common female name in Sweden, especially among those born after 1980. It was initially used as a shortened form of names such as Carolina, Nikolina, Adelina and Evelina but eventually became a name in its own right. Since -lina is a diminutive suffix, it has no meaning of its own in Swedish.
Lina (لينا) is also a female name used in Arabic. Its main meaning is 'tender' or 'tenderness'. It also refers to a small young palm tree in Arabic.
The name Lina also has roots in China, France and Greece. In China, it means 'pretty' and 'elegant'.
Lina is the name of the maid in Astrid Lindgren's stories of Emil i Lönneberga (Emil of Maple Hill).
